ADVERBS

Adverbs

Adverbs add information to verbs and adjectives: how often, where, when, how. Their position in the sentence is fixed, and the form depends on the word they describe.

Прислівники додають інформацію до дієслів і прикметників: як часто, де, коли, як. Місце в реченні сталe, а форма залежить від слова, яке вони описують.

−She isn't quickShe doesn't run quickly
?Is she quick?Does she run quickly?

Spelling: quick → quickly · easy → easily · Same form: fast, hard, late · Special: good → well

A1

Always, usually, often, never

New

Frequency adverbs go before the main verb, but after be. Sometimes can also go at the start or the end of the sentence. Always, usually, often, never ставимо перед основним дієсловом, але після be. В українській порядок вільний («Я ходжу завжди в спортзал»), в англійській — ні.

subject+ always / often / never+ verb

  • I usually walk to school. Я зазвичай ходжу до школи пішки.
  • She is never late. Вона ніколи не спізнюється.
  • I go always to the gym.
  • I always go to the gym.

Типова помилка: Never вже є запереченням: She never comes, а не She doesn't never come.

Place and time at the end

New

Put place and time at the end of the sentence, place first, then time. Do not put them between the verb and its object. Місце і час ставимо в кінець речення, спочатку місце, потім час. Не ставимо їх між дієсловом і додатком.

subject+ verb + object+ place+ time

  • We met our friends at the park yesterday. Ми зустріли друзів у парку вчора.
  • I do my homework at home every day. Я щодня роблю домашнє завдання вдома.
  • I do every day my homework.
  • I do my homework every day.

Типова помилка: В українській можна сказати «Я щодня роблю уроки», а англійською час не стоїть між дієсловом і додатком: I do my homework every day.

Quickly, carefully, well: how it happens

New

Manner adverbs say how something happens. Add -ly to an adjective (quick → quickly) and put the adverb after the verb or after its object. Use the adjective after be and look, not the adverb. Прислівник способу відповідає на питання «як?». Додаємо -ly до прикметника (quick → quickly) і ставимо після дієслова чи додатка.

subject+ verb+ manner adverb

  • He drives carefully. Він їздить обережно.
  • She speaks English slowly. Вона говорить англійською повільно.
  • He speaks quick.
  • He speaks quickly.

Типова помилка: В українській прикметник і прислівник різні («швидкий» і «швидко»), а англійською після дієслова легко залишити прикметник: He speaks quick. Потрібен прислівник: quickly.

Good or well

New

Good is an adjective: it describes a noun. Well is the adverb of good: it describes a verb. You play well, but you are a good player. Good — прикметник («гарний»), well — прислівник («добре»). Ти граєш well, але ти good player.

subject+ verb+ well

  • She is a good singer. Вона гарна співачка.
  • She sings well. Вона добре співає.
  • He speaks English good.
  • He speaks English well.

Типова помилка: Українське «добре» і «гарний» — різні слова, але англійською good перед іменником і після be, а well — після дієслова дії. Не кажемо He speaks good.

A2

Very much and a lot with verbs

New

Do not put very before a verb. Use very much or a lot after the verb or its object. Really can go before the verb: I really like it. Very не ставимо перед дієсловом. Для дієслів використовуємо very much або a lot після дієслова чи додатка. Really може стояти перед дієсловом.

subject+ verb+ object+ very much / a lot

  • I like this song very much. Мені дуже подобається ця пісня.
  • She really loves dogs. Вона дуже любить собак.
  • I very like this film.
  • I like this film very much.

Типова помилка: Українське «дуже» стоїть перед дієсловом: «я дуже люблю». Англійською I very like неправильно. Кажемо I like it very much або I really like it.

Fast, hard, late and hardly

New

Some adverbs have the same form as the adjective: fast, hard, late, early. Hardly is a different word: it means almost not. Fast, hard, late, early мають однакову форму як прикметник і прислівник: He works hard. Hardly — інше слово, воно означає «ледве / майже не».

subject+ verb+ fast / hard / late

  • He works hard every day. Він щодня наполегливо працює.
  • I can hardly hear you. Я ледве чую тебе.
  • He works hardly.
  • He works hard.

Типова помилка: Hard схоже на «наполегливо», а hardly — на «дуже сильно», але hardly означає «ледве»: He works hardly — майже не працює.
