FOCUS

Fronting for focus

Put the part you want to stress at the start of the sentence. The rest keeps its normal word order: subject + verb.

Поставте на початок речення те, що хочете виділити. Решта речення зберігає звичайний порядок слів: підмет + дієслово.

Prepositional phraseAdverb
+In the morning, I drink teaLuckily, nobody was hurt
−At school, I don't wear jeansUsually, she doesn't eat meat
?At the weekend, do you work?Today, are you free?

Comma after the opening part · Subject before the verb · Opening a sentence with The problem is that → a full clause

A2

Place or time at the start

New

Put a prepositional phrase of time or place first to focus on it. Add a comma, then keep the normal order: subject + verb. Обставину часу або місця можна поставити на початок речення, щоб виділити її. Після неї кома, а далі звичайний порядок: підмет + дієслово.

In the morning+ subject+ verb

  • In the morning, I drink tea. Вранці я п'ю чай.
  • At the weekend, we visit my parents. На вихідних ми провідуємо моїх батьків.
  • In the morning drink I tea.
  • In the morning, I drink tea.

Типова помилка: В українській після обставини на початку можна поставити дієслово перед підметом («Вранці п'ю я чай»). В англійській підмет завжди стоїть перед дієсловом: In the morning, I drink tea.

B1

Adverbs at the start

New

Put an adverb first to focus on it or to show your attitude: Luckily, Yesterday, Usually. Add a comma, then keep the normal order: subject + verb. Прислівник можна поставити на початок речення, щоб виділити його або показати своє ставлення: Luckily, Yesterday, Usually. Після нього кома, а далі звичайний порядок: підмет + дієслово.

Luckily+ subject+ verb

  • Luckily, nobody was hurt. На щастя, ніхто не постраждав.
  • Yesterday, I missed the bus. Вчора я запізнився на автобус.
  • Luckily was nobody hurt.
  • Luckily, nobody was hurt.

Типова помилка: В українській можна сказати «На щастя, не постраждав ніхто». В англійській після прислівника підмет іде перед дієсловом: Luckily, nobody was hurt.

B2

The problem is (that)

New

Start with The thing / problem / point / fact, then is (that) and a full clause. Use that, not what or which. Почніть із The thing / problem / point / fact, далі is (that) і повне речення. Використовуйте that, а не what чи which.

The problem+ is+ that+ subject+ verb

  • The problem is that we have no money. Проблема в тому, що в нас немає грошей.
  • The point is that she was right. Річ у тім, що вона мала рацію.
  • The problem is what we have no money.
  • The problem is that we have no money.

Типова помилка: Українське «в тому, що» — це that, а не what. what тут не підходить, бо за ним іде повне речення з підметом.
