VERBS

Phrasal verbs

A verb with a small word (up, off, in, to) often has its own meaning. Some take an object, some do not, and some let the object sit in the middle.

Дієслово з маленьким словом (up, off, in, to) часто має власне значення. Одні вживаються з додатком, інші без, а в деяких додаток може стояти посередині.

+Please sit downTurn the light off / Turn off the light
−Don't give upDon't turn it off
?When did you get up?Did you turn the light off?

With a pronoun the particle goes after it: turn it off · pick them up · put it on

A1

Verb + preposition + object

New

Some verbs always go with a fixed preposition before their object. The preposition cannot be dropped, and the object stays after it. Деякі дієслова завжди вживаються з певним прийменником перед додатком. Прийменник не можна пропустити.

subject+ listen / wait / look+ to / for / at+ object

  • I listen to the radio every morning. Я щоранку слухаю радіо.
  • We are waiting for the bus. Ми чекаємо на автобус.
  • I listen the radio.
  • I listen to the radio.

Типова помилка: В українській «слухати музику», «чекати автобус» — без прийменника. В англійській він обов’язковий: listen to, wait for.

A2

Phrasal verb without an object

New

Some phrasal verbs have no object, and the particle completes the meaning. If you drop the particle, the meaning changes or is lost. Деякі фразові дієслова вживаються без додатка, і частка завершує значення. Якщо пропустити частку, значення змінюється або зникає.

subject+ verb+ particle

  • The plane takes off at ten. Літак злітає о десятій.
  • Please sit down and relax. Будь ласка, сядьте й розслабтеся.
  • The plane takes at ten.
  • The plane takes off at ten.

A2

Pronoun between verb and particle

New

When the object is a pronoun (it, them, me), put it between the verb and the particle. Never put the pronoun after the particle. Коли додаток — займенник (it, them, me), ставимо його між дієсловом і часткою. Після частки займенник не ставимо.

subject+ verb+ it / them / me+ particle

  • Turn it off, please. Вимкни це, будь ласка.
  • I picked them up from school. Я забрав їх зі школи.
  • Turn off it, please.
  • Turn it off, please.

Типова помилка: Українською порядок слів вільний: «вимкни це» і «вимкни його» звучать однаково. В англійській займенник стоїть між дієсловом і часткою: turn it off.

A2

Look forward to + -ing

New

Look forward to means that you feel happy about something in the future. To here is a preposition, so a verb after it takes -ing. Look forward to означає, що ви з нетерпінням чекаєте на щось у майбутньому. Тут to — прийменник, тому дієслово після нього має форму -ing.

subject+ look forward to+ noun / verb + -ing

  • I look forward to seeing you soon. Я з нетерпінням чекаю на зустріч з тобою.
  • She is looking forward to the holiday. Вона з нетерпінням чекає на відпустку.
  • I look forward to see you.
  • I look forward to seeing you.

Типова помилка: Українське «з нетерпінням чекаю побачити» має інфінітив, тому легко сказати look forward to see. Після look forward to потрібне -ing: to seeing.

B1

Noun object: before or after the particle

New

With a noun object you can put the noun after the particle or between the verb and the particle. A long object usually goes after the particle. З іменником-додатком його можна ставити після частки або між дієсловом і часткою. Довгий додаток зазвичай стоїть після частки.

  • Please turn off the TV. Вимкніть, будь ласка, телевізор.
  • Please turn the TV off. Телевізор, будь ласка, вимкніть.
  • Please turn the off TV.
  • Please turn the TV off.
