Comparatives and superlatives

Add -er or more to compare two things, and the + -est or the most for the top of a group.

-er або more — щоб порівняти два предмети, the + -est або the most — для найвищого ступеня в групі.

Short adjectives: -er

New

With short adjectives add -er (-r after e) and use than. Double the last letter after a short vowel (big → bigger) and change -y to -ier. До коротких прикметників додаємо -er (-r після e) і вживаємо than. Після короткого голосного подвоюємо приголосну (big → bigger), -y змінюємо на -ier.

  • My brother is taller than me. Мій брат вищий за мене.
  • Today is hotter than yesterday. Сьогодні спекотніше, ніж учора.
  • This bag is more cheap than that one.
  • This bag is cheaper than that one.

Типова помилка: Українською порівняння — одне слово («вищий»), тому англійською легко сказати more tall. Короткі прикметники беруть -er.

Long adjectives: more

New

With longer adjectives put more before the adjective and use than. Do not add -er to them. З довшими прикметниками ставимо more перед прикметником і вживаємо than. -er до них не додаємо.

Типова помилка: Українські «цікавіша», «дорожчі» — одне слово із закінченням. Англійською довгі прикметники порівнюємо через more: more interesting, more expensive.

Irregular: good and bad

New

Good and bad have their own forms: better / the best and worse / the worst. Do not add -er or more. Good і bad мають особливі форми: better / the best, worse / the worst. Не додавайте -er і не ставте more.

  • This phone is better than my old one. Цей телефон кращий за мій старий.
  • The weather today is worse than yesterday. Сьогодні погода гірша, ніж учора.

Типова помилка: Українські «кращий» і «гірший» — теж окремі слова, схоже на better і worse. Помилка виникає, коли додають -er: gooder, badder.

Superlatives: the + -est / the most

Типова помилка: Українське «найвищий» — одне слово. Англійською потрібне the: the tallest. Без the речення звучить неправильно.

One of the + superlative + plural

Use one of the + superlative + a plural noun when there are several top ones. The noun after it is always plural. One of the + найвищий ступінь + іменник у множині, коли таких «найкращих» кілька.

  • She is one of the best teachers in the school. Вона одна з найкращих учителів у школі.
  • Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Париж — одне з найкрасивіших міст Європи.
  • She is one of the best teacher in the school.

Типова помилка: Українською «одна з найкращих учителів» теж у множині, але легко забути -s в англійському іменнику: one of the best teachers.

Put much, a bit or even before a comparative to show the size of the difference. Repeat it with and for a change over time: colder and colder. Перед порівняльним ступенем ставимо much, a bit, even. Very тут не вживаємо. Повтор з and показує зміну: colder and colder.

Типова помилка: Українське «набагато» англійською — much, а не very. «Дуже» до порівняльного ступеня не підходить.

Use as + adjective + as when two things are equal, and not as … as when the first is less. The adjective stays in its basic form. As … as — однаково, not as … as — менше. Між двома as стоїть звичайна форма прикметника.

  • My sister is as tall as me. Моя сестра така ж висока, як і я.
  • This bag isn't as heavy as that one. Ця сумка не така важка, як та.
  • My sister is as tall than me.

Типова помилка: Українське «такий … як» англійською — as … as. Не кажіть as tall than: після прикметника потрібне ще одне as.
