CONJUNCTIONS

Conjunctions: and, but, because, although

Conjunctions join words and clauses: and adds, but contrasts, or gives a choice, because gives a reason and so gives a result.

Сполучники з'єднують слова й речення: and додає, but протиставляє, or дає вибір, because — причина, so — наслідок.

Because introduces the reason. So introduces the result. Do not use both in one sentence. Because вводить причину. So вводить наслідок. Не вживайте обидва в одному реченні.

reason+ because+ result+ so

  • I stayed at home because it was raining. Я залишився вдома, бо йшов дощ.
  • It was raining, so I stayed at home. Йшов дощ, тому я залишився вдома.
  • I stayed at home so it was raining.
  • I stayed at home because it was raining.

Типова помилка: Українське «тому що» — це because, а «тому» — so. Не змішуйте: because ... so — помилка.

When, before, after, while

Use when for a moment, before / after for the order of events and while for two actions at the same time. When — коли, у певний момент; before / after — порядок подій; while — дві дії водночас.

when / before / after / while+ subject+ verb

  • I always brush my teeth before I go to bed. Я завжди чищу зуби, перш ніж лягти спати.
  • She was cooking while he was reading. Вона готувала, поки він читав.
  • I brush my teeth after to eat.
  • I brush my teeth after I eat.

Типова помилка: Після before / after / when — підмет і дієслово (after I eat), а не інфінітив чи іменник.

Although: two ideas that surprise

Use although + clause for a surprising contrast. Do not add but in the same sentence. Although + речення — несподіване протиставлення. Не додавайте but у тому ж реченні.

  • Although it was cold, we went swimming. Хоча було холодно, ми пішли купатися.
  • She passed the test although she didn't study. Вона склала тест, хоча не вчилася.
  • Although it was cold, but we went out.
  • Although it was cold, we went out.

Типова помилка: В українській «хоча … але» можливе, а в англійській although … but — помилка.
