VERBS

Verb + to or -ing

When two verbs go together, the second one is either to + base verb or the -ing form. The first verb decides which one.

Коли два дієслова стоять разом, друге — це або to + базова форма, або форма на -ing. Яку саме, вирішує перше дієслово.

to + base verbverb + -ing
+I want to goI enjoy going
−I don't want to goI don't enjoy going
?Do you want to go?Do you enjoy going?

After like / love / hate: both · After would like: to only · After make / let: base verb only · Spelling: make → making, run → running, lie → lying

Verbs followed by to

New

After want, need, hope, decide, plan, learn and try, use to + base verb. Після want, need, hope, decide, plan, learn і try вживаємо to + базова форма дієслова.

subject+ want / need / decide+ to+ base verb

  • I want to learn English. Я хочу вивчити англійську.
  • She decided to stay at home. Вона вирішила залишитися вдома.
  • I want go home.
  • I want to go home.

Типова помилка: Українське «хочу піти» не має частки між дієсловами, тому to легко пропустити. В англійській вона обов'язкова: I want to go, а не I want go.

Would like, would love, would prefer

New

After would like, would love and would prefer use to + base verb, never -ing. Use them for wishes and polite offers. Після would like, would love і would prefer вживаємо to + базова форма, ніколи -ing. Для побажань і ввічливих пропозицій.

subject+ would like+ to+ base verb

  • I would like to have a coffee. Я хотів би випити кави.
  • Would you like to come with us? Чи не хотіли б ви піти з нами?
  • I would like going to the cinema.
  • I would like to go to the cinema.

Типова помилка: Через різницю між «люблю ходити» (I like going) і «хотів би піти» (I would like to go) легко сплутати форми. Після would like завжди to + базова форма.

New

When another person does the action, put them after the verb and use to + base verb: want, ask, tell, advise and would like + person + to + verb. Do not use that. Коли дію виконує інша людина, ставимо її після дієслова і вживаємо to + базова форма: want, ask, tell, advise, would like + людина + to + дієслово. Без that.

  • I want you to come. Я хочу, щоб ти прийшов.
