CLAUSES

Purpose: to, for, so that

Say why you do something with to + base verb. Use so that + clause when the reason has its own subject, and for + noun or -ing for what a thing is used for.

Мету виражайте через to + базова форма дієслова. Якщо в меті інший підмет — so that + речення, а для призначення речі — for + іменник або -ing.

To answer Why?, use to + base verb. In order to means the same and sounds more formal. На питання Why? відповідайте to + базова форма дієслова. In order to означає те саме, але звучить формальніше.

Типова помилка: Українське «щоб» тут не for: «Я прийшов, щоб побачити тебе» — I came to see you, а не for see you.

Типова помилка: Після for дієслово завжди з -ing: «для приготування» — for cooking, а не for cook.

Типова помилка: Після «щоб» в українській не потрібне модальне дієслово, а в англійській воно обов'язкове: so that everyone could understand.

Purpose you want to avoid

For a purpose you want to avoid, use so as not to + verb, or so that + won't / wouldn't + verb. Щоб виразити небажану мету («щоб не…»), вживайте so as not to + дієслово або so that + won't / wouldn't + дієслово.

  • I set an alarm so as not to be late. Я поставив будильник, щоб не запізнитися.
  • She spoke quietly so that she wouldn't wake the baby. Вона говорила тихо, щоб не розбудити дитину.
  • I wrote it down for not forget.

Типова помилка: «Щоб не запізнитися» — це so as not to be late, а не for not to be late.
